What it’s all about and why

I realized a while back that school prepared me to be an order taker. To listen to what others thought and not to think for myself. It  provided an education of what I ‘may need’ and not what I needed at the moment. So I took things into my own hands and started searching for my own answers. There were many skills I realized formed the foundation for everything we do, no matter the path we choose. Along the way I began to question why we go to school to learn, but never actually learn how to learn. What are the best ways to learn something to a point where you have deep understanding and can apply it when needed? Once you learn it, what’s the best approach to remembering all of it?

How do you practice a skill so you can consistently improve, continuously challenge yourself, and increase your ability? How do you deal with the setbacks you encounter along the way? How do you improve your relationships with other people? How can you be more certain that the decisions you make are good ones?

These are only some of the questions Big Skill set out to answer and it’s all shared here. I’m constantly trying to fill gaps in my learning and writing about it. It’s my hope that the content will stir your curiosity, inspire you to ask questions, and encourage you to pursue the life you want.

I’m serious about raising awareness to improve education so more people attain the skills and knowledge necessary to create the life they want. That’s why Big Skill donates a percentage of all sales to educational organizations.

Big Skill…

Focuses not just on the information, but application. If you don’t apply what you learn, then you won’t be able to use it when you need it. You’ll find different ideas and experiments here to try for yourself.

Whose lines are these anyway…

My name is Andres Ponciano. A few years ago I quit my job and went out on my own to follow the dream of being an entrepreneur and live life on my terms. What happened was a different story from what I had planned. I found myself frustrated by all the setbacks and looking for direction in my life. This road led me to different types of work, new skills learned, lots of frustration, late nights working, and constant questioning of whether what I was doing, was the best use of my time.

As I worked towards the life I imagined, I found myself writing down countless notes on different topics I studied; from books, courses, and people. But they just sat there, on a desk, for my eyes only. I knew those ideas could help other people on their path. So to create value and help the most people, Big Skill was born. A place to share thoughts, findings, experiments, and everything in between.

I’m no expert. I am a beginner. A beginner’s mind and lots of curiosity is what has led me down this path. I’ve jumped around from place to place and job to job and lived in many countries. In college, I studied music and worked as a full time musician afterwards. Taught piano, bass, and guitar at music academies and gigged as much as I could; playing jazz, fusion, and spanish rock. Then I got tired and worried of living paycheck to paycheck and started falling in love with the stock market. It was, unfortunately, unrequited love and although I eventually did manage to get a good handle on how things functioned, (I think), it was too late. I had burned out and so had the money invested.

At that point in time I started to reassess my life and ended up in China (because that’s where people go to reassess their life). China was a breath of fresh air and provided lots of opportunities. It also gave me a job teaching English, Spanish, TOEFL, and SAT. For the first time I felt control over my future. Eventually, I decided to move away and do something I considered more meaningful, with my life. That led me to a new place, a new beginning, and the pursuit of my own online business; work I could do from anywhere.

Learntoplayguitareasily.org was my first website. A guitar course I created with videos and an ebook, which I never marketed and decided to take down. Bitten by the internet bug, I started to learn about social media marketing, SEO, website design, and marketing. That’s where I spent the last two years; doing freelance consulting work for small businesses. In between that, I spent 4 months managing a Spanish Tapas restaurant. My work background is varied and it is sure to scare any HR department or recruiter (or make them laugh). Nonetheless, I am proud of it. I read somewhere that moving from job to job doesn’t look good on a resume. Paradoxically, it’s a sign of ambition in someone that is eager to continue improving their abilities and increasing the level of challenge in their life. Funny enough, that is also the definition of what psychologist’s refer to as, ‘flow.’

Robert Frost said it best, “two paths diverged in a yellow wood, and I, I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.”
I may have taken those lines too literally. But it’s led down interesting places and provided multiple experiences and new ideas. That’s what I share here.

I’m just like anyone else, asking questions, seeking out answers, and testing them out. In the process, I’ll provide you with the most useful ideas.
